The History of Labor Unions
The first Local Union in the United States was started in 1792 by a group of Philadelphia Shoemakers.
In 1799 the first union contract was won after a ten day strike
In 1886 the American Federation of Labor ( AFL ) was started in Columbus
In 1935 the Committee for Industrial Organization was started
The AFL-ClO was merged forming the largest labor movement in history

AFSCME DISTRICT COUNCIL 33
AFSCME District Council 33 is the largest public service union in the state of Pennsylvania It represents most of the people employed by the city of Philadelphia.
The union consists of fourteen (14 ) different Locals. ( departments). Each Local is run separately from each other. They all have their own set of bylaws ( rules and regulations) to abide by.
Each Local has its own set of officers that are elected by its members. These officers are called the executive board. Each Executive Board has a President. Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and Business Agent.
The number of members in each Local varies according to the size of the departments they serve. The fourteen locals together make a Council.
The Council is run by an Executive Board which consists of a President, Vice President, Secretary/Treasurer. There is also a Board Of Delegates. On which each local has a varying amount of members.
It is the responsibility of the Board Of delegates to make sure that the wishes of its members are heard and acted on by the Executive Board in the different meetings held by the council.
It is also the responsibility of the delegates to relay to the members any information and or policy that the whole council decides on.
